This is a listing of some of the frequently asked questions regarding studying abroad. Most of these questions are addressed elsewhere on this site, but we have compiled them here for your convenience.

How much does it cost to study abroad?

Fall and Spring semester: CSUB tuition plus additional fees for housing, food, visa and incidentals (typically).               

Summer and Winter: Prices vary by program, but it can range from $700-$4000.

  • Room and meals
  • Personal expenses

Will the courses I take abroad count towards my degree?

Yes, the courses you take studying abroad can count towards your degree at CSUB. Make an appointment with the study abroad office to begin this process.

Can I use my financial aid to study abroad?

Funding may be available to qualified students who plan to study abroad during the fall or spring semester. Students should not expect Financial Aid to study abroad for the Summer nor Winter, but resources and scholarships are available for qualified students who need financial assistance. Please contact the Financial Aid office as early as possible to understand the financial options available to you.

What are the minimum requirements to study abroad?

To study abroad for summer or semester, the minimum CSUB GPA required is a 2.30 and at least a sophomore standing. Transfer students are also able to study abroad after completing one semester at CSUB with a 2.30 GPA. 

For students who wish to study abroad for the academic year, the GPA requirement and class standing will depend on the country you choose, with some countries being more competitive than others.

Where can I study abroad?

There are more than 30 countries to choose across our short-term, semester-long, and year-long programs. Please see the programs section for more details.

When can I study abroad?

You can study abroad during summer or winter (referred to as our short-term programs), for the fall or spring semesters, or for the full academic year.

Do I need to know the local language to study abroad?

No, many of our programs are taught in English. In addition, many of our programs where English is not the primary language offer language classes that we encourage you to take to maximize your experience abroad. We also encourage you to enroll in language classes before you depart if that option is available to you.

Can I study abroad in more than one country?

Yes, but you would have to consult with the study abroad office to discuss the procedure and see if it is a viable option.
