Educational Background

Dr. Dugan graduated with a B.A. and M.A. in sociology from Illinois State University, and earned her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC). She also earned a certificate in Women and Gender Studies from UIC. Trained in qualitative methodologies, Dr. Dugan’s doctoral work centered on the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, and gender. Her dissertation research focused on conducting life history interviews to understand the racial identity negotiations of Black Welsh immigrant women who migrated to the United States as the wives of Black American servicemen.

For CSUB’s 2019-2020 academic year, Dr. Dugan was awarded the Millie Ablin Excellence in Teaching Award.

 

Research/Scholarship

Dr. Dugan has scholarly publications in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Contemporary Sociology, and The Encyclopedia of Social Problems, and a book chapter (co-authored with R. Stephen Warner and Elise Martel) published in Sustaining Faith Traditions: Race, Ethnicity, and Religion among the Latino and Asian Second Generation.  Her current research interests focus on the role of social space and Blackness and will have a chapter titled “Black Placemaking at an HSI” published in the forthcoming book Reclaiming Space, edited by Dr. Shaylyn Marks, Associate Professor of Teacher Education at CSUB. Additionally, Dr. Dugan is part of a collaborative in-depth interview research project with CSUB colleagues Dr. Juterh Nmah (Educational Counseling) and Dr. Sarana Roberts (Special Education) exploring the academic and social experiences of Black/African American students who attend an HSI.

Education

Dr. Henderson earned his Ph.D. at Stony Brook University where he studied environmental sociology, global inequality, and quantitative methods.

Teaching

He teaches SOC 4008 Society and the Natural Environment, SOC 4020 Globalization and Social Change, SOC 4988 Senior Seminar, and SOC 4200 Quantitative Analysis. His students are frequently involved with CSUB’s Edible Garden.

Research

Dr. Henderson has published in several reputable, peer-reviewed journals including International Journal of Sociology, Environmental Sociology, and Journal of World-Systems Research amongst others. His scholarship focuses on environmental and social issues at the international level such as climate change, deforestation, food production, and global inequality.
