Dr. Herman Explains the Giant Kamchatka Earthquake
The magnitude 8.8 earthquake that occurred near Kamchatka, Russia, on July 29th, 2025, was one of the largest earthquakes recorded around the world since 1900, and produced a tsunami that hit coastlines across the Pacific Ocean. CSUB Geology's Dr. Herman leapt into action to study this event with colleagues at the U.S. Geological Survey and other institutions, and to explain the earthquake's relevance to the local community.
23ABC's Madi Vollmer visited Dr. Herman on campus to learn more about this earthquake:
Dr. Herman also visited Elaina Rusk and Kevin Charette at the KGET Channel 17 studio in downtown Bakersfield to talk about the earthquake and tsunami with them:
In between media appearances, Dr. Herman worked with the USGS to put together a scrolling story map for the earthquake to explain the scientific details of this earthquake and its broader significance.
After the story map was published, KGET brought Dr. Herman back into the studio to chat about his findings!
