Calliope Submission Guidelines

We are excited to announce that the Department of English at CSUB is welcoming submissions for Calliope! For our 2026 issue, we are looking for academic essays by currently enrolled CSUB students that address any aspect of literature, art, and/or culture. In addition, we are accepting book reviews on recently published literary works. Publishing in a journal is a major accomplishment, so we hope you consider sending your work to Calliope.

Submission Details:

Essay submissions can be 3-15 pages (including Works Cited). We accept a broad range of academic essays, whether they are focused on literary analysis, close reading, or research. There are no restrictions on historical period or literary genre being studied in an essay.
Book reviews can be 2-5 pages. We are especially interested in reviews that cover recently awarded books by prizes such as the National Book Award or the Booker Prize Award, though we are equally as interested in reviews that address underrepresented literatures.
Essays and book reviews are to follow MLA, APA, or Chicago Style guidelines.

Artificial Intelligence Policy

In response to the increasing use of emerging technologies in academic writing, Calliope has adopted an Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy, which aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of AI, while also encouraging responsible and ethical practices in academic writing.

Works created solely using AI, large language models (LLMs), or similar technologies do not qualify for authorship, and will not be accepted for publication.

Works using AI, LLMs, or similar technologies to assist in the editing process may be submitted. Authors should report their use of any technologies in an Acknowledgment section within the submission. This should include the name of the technology used and a description of its use during the editing process.

Submission & Review Process:

The author must submit their work by 11:59 PM on March 1, 2026 to calliope@csub.edu from their @csub.edu account.
Submissions limited to one work.
After submission, the editorial team will acknowledge receipt of the author's work through email.
The submission will be anonymized for a blind review process to ensure the editorial team is objective and fair at all stages of the process.
The editorial team will carefully review the author's work collectively.
Once a consensus has been reached, the author will be contacted on whether or not the work has been selected for publication.
Any additional edit requests will be sent to the author pending selection for publication.
