David Barrera, PHD

BIOGRAPHY

David Barrera is an Assistant Professor of English at CSUB, where he teaches courses in Latinx literature, U.S. multi-ethnic literature, children’s literature, and film studies. Prior to joining CSUB, he taught writing and literary studies while completing his Ph.D. in English at UC Davis, where he was also a Eugene V. Cota-Robles fellow. As a previous Sally Casanova Scholar at California State University, Long Beach, where he completed his M.A. in English, he is very honored to return to the CSU system as a tenure-track faculty member.

Since his time at UC Berkeley for his B.A. in English and Rhetoric, he has demonstrated a long-standing interest and commitment to visual studies and Latinx studies, manifesting in his research. His latest research focuses on Latinx visual culture in Southern California across the twentieth-century into the present. He is currently working on a book project that examines visual archives of his home region in California, the Imperial Valley. His peer-reviewed articles will be published in American Quarterly and Inks: The Journal of the Comics Studies Society.

On the national level, he is a member of the Latinx Studies Association. At CSUB, he is the advisor for Calliope, the Department’s academic journal of research and scholarship by undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Arts & Humanities. Beyond the profession, he is a musician and an avid collector of VHS tapes.
