Brooke Hughes, MA

BIOGRAPHY

Brooke Hughes (she/her/hers) has been teaching at CSU Bakersfield for over 20 years. She primarily teaches upper-division composition, freshman composition, and a grammar and writing brush-up course.

A first-generation college student herself, Brooke brings a strong sense of empathy and accessibility to her teaching. Her classroom approach is grounded in care, co-creation, and reflection. She’s passionate about using technology compassionately and mindfully to support learning—especially for neurodiverse students—and about creating inclusive, equitable learning environments where students can grow at their own pace. Her teaching emphasizes building rhetorical literacy gradually, honoring students’ readiness, and connecting theory to practice in transparent, supportive ways.

Her research explores the intersection of pedagogy and technology, particularly in hybrid and fully asynchronous learning spaces. Brooke has shared her work at numerous conferences and roundtables, including giving four keynote addresses. 

Originally from Illinois, Brooke is an avid reader and baker. She’s also a lifelong hockey fan and season ticket holder for the Bakersfield Condors—if you see her at a game, don’t be shy about saying hi! She also loves to travel, especially to catch games in new cities.
